One of the questions we get most often from coaches planning a trip with us is simple: "What level are the local clubs?"

It's the right question to ask. The quality of the opposition is what determines whether the football part of your tour is genuinely useful or just a bit of fun in the sun. Here's an honest answer.

The Catalan Football System

Catalonia has one of the most developed grassroots football structures in Europe, administered by the Federació Catalana de Futbol (FCF) — one of the largest regional football federations in the world, with over 14,000 affiliated clubs and 600,000 registered players.

Youth football in Catalonia is organised in age groups from U7 right through to U18, with multiple competitive tiers at each level. Even at amateur grassroots level, the standard of coaching and technical development is high — the influence of FC Barcelona's methodology filters down through the entire system.

What Style of Play Should You Expect?

Catalan youth football is heavily influenced by the positional play philosophy — the same approach that made FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team dominant for over a decade. In practice, that means:

For a British or Irish side used to a more physical, direct game, playing against a technically superior Catalan team is a genuine challenge — and a genuine learning experience. We always match opposition to your level, but expect to be tested.

How We Match Opposition to Your Team

This is where being local matters. We have genuine relationships with clubs across the Costa Daurada, Baix Penedès and surrounding areas — clubs like Juventud Bisbalenca, Santa Oliva, and many others at various levels.

Before your trip, we ask detailed questions about your team:

With that information, we find the right opposition. Not a team that will embarrass your players, but one that will push them, make them think, and give them something to work on when they get home.

The Matchday Experience

Youth football matches in Catalonia are typically well-organised, with proper pitches (usually high-quality artificial turf — the standard across Catalan grassroots football), qualified referees, and a proper matchday atmosphere.

We handle all the logistics:

Beyond the Match: Meeting the Hosts

One of the most underrated parts of a football tour is the cultural exchange. We can arrange for your coaching staff to meet their opposite numbers before or after the match — a conversation about training methods, player development, or just football philosophy over a coffee or a meal.

For coaches, it's often one of the most valuable parts of the whole trip. For players, shaking hands with kids their own age who approach the game completely differently is a genuinely broadening experience.

How Many Matches?

On a standard week-long trip, we typically include two to three competitive matches. Some groups prefer more — some prefer fewer and more training time. We build the schedule around your preferences.

What we don't do is fill the week with low-quality friendly fixtures just to say you played five games. Two great matches against the right opposition are worth far more than five forgettable ones.

Senior Teams Welcome

We work with all age groups from U12 to senior. For adult amateur or semi-professional teams looking for a preseason trip with competitive fixtures, Catalonia in the summer is an outstanding option. The climate, the facilities, and the quality of opposition at senior amateur level in this region are excellent.
